Recital Formats

I try to plan 2 recitals per year, one formal, and one informal. The December recital is an informal recital, but there is a purpose to it being informal. First of all, the format of the recital is "Christmas Party". I'm sure you all have attended Christmas parties in the past where there were many friends as well as people you haven't met. There was always plenty of food and hopefully a nice atmosphere. In the background is usually some nice Christmas music of some sort. Well, this format is how I conduct our December recitals. There are many friends and acquaintances in the audience, plenty of food and a nice relaxed atmosphere. However, instead of piped in Christmas music, my students provide the music. Since the atmosphere is light and informal, I do not require them to memorize their music. You might think that this recital is easy for the students, however, there is a learning experience that comes along with this. There might not be as much pressure for the students performance wise, but they need to learn to perform with distractions (i.e.: people talking, other students lurking around the piano, etc.). Ultimately, this recital is a lesson in concentration.

In the spring, the students will learn to conduct themselves in a formal atmosphere - how to stand, bow, memorize, and generally, look confident. The spring recital is generally held in April or May. Dates will be determined as they become available.
